Experience
Mr. Childers served as an NC District Conservationist for nearly thirty years. During his tenure, he was responsible for supervision and management of a natural resource conservation team, as well as providing leadership for administration and technical activities to accomplish a comprehensive resource conservation program. Mr. Childers served as the NRCS representative with the Soil and Water Conservation District and established positive working relations with other federal, state, and local organizations interested in natural resource conservation concerns. Additionally, he provided leadership for program activities and coordinated a comprehensive information program to keep the public informed of the need for natural resource conservation.
As a technician and soil conservationist in Gaston and Lincoln Counties for the USDA/Soil Conservation Service, Mr. Childers advised on and performed scientific work in a coordinated program of soil, water, and resource conservation which required the application of a combination of agricultural sciences in order to bring about the proper land use and to improve the quality of the environment.
More recently, Mr. Childers has worked as a field enumerator in western North Carolina for the USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service by interviewing farmers with regards to production, cost, and return information on field crops, cattle, hay, hogs, chickens, Christmas trees, nursery, dairy, and tobacco. He has also worked as a consultant specializing in stream bank stabilization including wetland/golf course project(s), installation of structures to stabilize erosion, assistance with delineation, stream bank stabilization projects, and channel relocation.
As a volunteer for the Peace Corps from 2004-2006, Mr. Childers served as a consultant in strengthening organization and development for the Association for Economical and Social Development of Maramures, Romania. Work included assisting in grant writing, project implementation, and training sessions on the development of agri-tourism. He also served to organize and promote multiple grassroots community recycling projects.
Most recently, Mr. Childers has been intregal in overseeing and conducting BFEC fieldwork in the implementation of stream restoration and bank stabilization projects.
